In Search of Employment That Actually Means Something
from:Most people have, at some point in their lives, had to accept employment they didn't really feel wonderful about. Whether it was dull and unchallenging or you didn't approve of the nature of the company, such work almost always prompts a search for a job that is more suitable as soon as possible. For many, this search for employment often involves a shift in criteria that must be met to pique the seekers interest.
Often it is good to start such a search with a list of things that are important to you in an employer and what important things you want to accomplish every way are. It is useful here to start with the very general and then you can later flesh your options out into full fledged search terms. In such a search, employment opportunities abound and it often becomes a matter of choosing a path you wish to pursue, given the available options.
On the other hand, sometimes you're certain you know exactly what job you want. In this case, it's useful to be very specific in your search. Employment in such situations is very often a matter of pitching your usefulness to a prospective employer rather than just applying for a job. It certainly shows initiative, and your continued enthusiastic attitude will, too.
Sometimes, in the case of a highly targeted search, employment that is well paying and meaningful is a matter of presenting your abilities as a package that will allow you to bring a fresh perspective and unique abilities to the job. This might even involve writing something of an essay and really familiarizing yourself with the business at hand, since you may need to really prove yourself.
When changing fields and very especially when older (as young as 30 in some fields!), it will probably take you a lot longer to find the job you want. As such, it's often best to begin such a search when you're still employed, or have several months of a nest egg saved up before you begin the search. Employment laws strictly forbid age-related discrimination, but it remains a reality for many, and it's best to be prepared.
Lastly, never underestimate the power of a social network to help give you the sort of insider information that can make a real difference, especially when you're looking for the sort of work that that is highly prized by others. Sometimes just being among the first to get your resume in can guarantee an interview. Either way, you're in a position to choose carefully, so examine yourself and search for employment that does more than just pay the bills.
